JA Adds Three More Women to its Leadership Team
/Johnston Architects has hired Alison Walker Brems as Principal, promoted Genevieve Theriault to Principal and Interior Design Manager, and promoted Mona Zellers to Principal.
Alison Walker Brems, AIA holds 27 years of experience. She joined the Johnston Architects team in 1998 and became a Principal in 2006. After leaving in 2011 to found her own firm, Art | Architecture Brems, she rejoined JA in 2021 and leads Quality Assurance/Quality Control for the firm. Brems has broad experience in historic structures and adaptive reuse projects. She has been affiliated with DoCoMoMo.WeWa, Historic Seattle, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and served as chair on the City of Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board. She is currently leading QA/QC for the Auburn Arts & Cultural Center, an adaptive reuse of a historic post office and a townhome development in Columbia City, among other projects. Genevieve Theriault, AIA, LEED AP BD+C joined JA in 2017, bringing with her a decade of broad experience in space planning and design for commercial tenant improvements, adaptive reuse, custom residential, multi-family and institutional projects, which she applies to projects like Oak Tree Pavilion. A licensed architect, Theriault also holds extensive interior architecture experience, and her dual strengths in design and project management led to her promotion to Principal and Manager of JA’s Interior Design studio. In this role she is responsible for developing and overseeing project schedules, budgets, and quality control while also leading design projects. Theriault is currently project architect and project manager for an extensive residential remodel and addition in Laurelhurst and the residences in the new Rainier Tower, as well as leading ADA upgrades at the Seattle Justice Center. Mona Zellers, AIA joined JA as an Associate in 2017 with ten years of experience designing for the public sector, including adaptive reuse, renovations and additions, and ground up education and health sciences projects throughout Washington. Zellers served on the AIA Seattle and Design in Public Boards of Directors from 2013-2016 and was honored with the National AIA Associates Award in 2017. At JA, Zellers developed and leads the firm’s internal Design Excellence program, which helps guide all projects through the early phases of design to ensure a strong conceptual framework and elevates design quality across all project types. Zellers is currently working as project architect on a condominium development in Capitol Hill, another in Queen Anne, and new libraries for the communities of Oak Lodge and Gladstone, Oregon. Zellers is also part of the innovative design team developing the concept for the new Seattle Public Utilities wastewater holding tank in Ballard, incorporating public art and interactive lighting in a new interpretation of a water tower.
