We're Waiting for You at Base Camp
/Today we'd like to transport you to Timber Cove - or, as we call it in the JA history books - Base Camp. And we have some exciting news to share: this perfect hideaway is on the market for the first time!
This remote, 7,700 SF retreat is unlike anything else in Washington, and that's the point. As outlined in this article in the Wall Street Journal, we worked closely with our clients to design a home that would support their active family in every season - snowmobiling, fishing, canoeing, and dirt bike riding. A home theater, pool table, ping pong table, swimming pool, and hot tub ensure there are plenty of ways to have fun staying home at Base Camp too.
With five growing sons, they needed plenty of beds for kids and teenagers (and their friends), so we designed them a bunk room that sleeps 13, and a gear room that stores all the messy equipment that goes along with the Great Outdoors. Easy to clean concrete floors throughout most of the home make for easy cleanup when mud or snow gets tracked in. Even the owner admits it feels a lot like a luxury summer camp.
The couple also needed attractive, flexible entertainment and meeting spaces to support their growing consulting business. With a great room, library, multi-purpose dining room, eat-in kitchen, and outdoor picnic tables, Base Camp can serve as a team retreat space for brainstorming and strategy work sessions. In fact, they've even had rock bands record albums here!
Reclaimed materials infuse every room at Base Camp, with wood from old Seattle warehouses used for custom cabinetry and an oil drum repurposed as a fire pit. Technology is integrated to enhance the home’s sustainable footprint, and architecturally, it’s designed to celebrate - and not compete with - its beautiful natural surroundings. It disappears into the forest and no neighboring residences are visible. As was noted in Seattle Magazine, it’s uniquely isolated and peaceful. The design is appreciated by many: images of Base Camp frequently appear on design websites and social media feeds, and it was named an AIA Seattle Home of Distinction in 2015.
Encouraging fresh air and social distancing in this space is easy. Though designed long before COVID, it works perfectly during these strange times. The home is split into three sections: sleeping, entertaining, and recreation. Five king-size bedroom suites mean that visitors can stay for days - or weeks at a time, if needed - with private sleeping and bathroom spaces. Terraces perch on every floor. Glass walls fold up and disappear, opening up common spaces to the great outdoors and letting in plenty of fresh mountain air. Fiber optic internet, independent water source, emergency generator, and solar water heating allow this home to nearly survive off the grid. And the theater room's 144" projector screen would definitely make Zoom meetings more enjoyable.
