VALLEY VIEW

This Methow Valley getaway combines playful building forms with a sophisticated structural system to maximize views, light, and living space in a compact footprint. Set on a hill overlooking the North Cascade Mountains, JA’s team explored numerous rooflines and glazing solutions to leverage western views without producing too much glare or solar heat gain. Settling on a split gable roofline satisfies the client’s irreverent design aesthetic, while an east-facing clerestory minimizes late afternoon glare while providing a vaulted ceiling and passive ventilation.

A glass breezeway connects the primary suite from the living spaces, a light-filled void that contrasts dramatically against the home’s black cedar and rusted, corrugated metal exterior. Along the two-bedroom home’s north/south axis, a textured plaster wall runs the length of the structure and grounds the space while floor-to-ceiling windows frame mountain views.
