TESSERACT
This full-scale interior remodel of this mid-century home in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood restores some of its former glory while reimagining it for another half-century of life. Our clients wanted a future-forward, high-tech renovation of their 60’s modernist home, while maintaining its original design intent and elegance. We worked closely with the contractor and consultants to provide the best experience for all the upgrades, helping to modernize an already iconic home with 21st century technology and aesthetics.
Ten rooms were renovated, including energy efficiency improvements such as radiant floors, wood fireplaces converted to gas, automatic shades and lighting, and mini-split heading. A unique, custom-designed lighting fixture was designed for the home’s foyer, based on the mathematical representation of a tesseract trefoil.
With the dramatic backdrop of the Puget Sound and downtown Seattle, another important aspect of the house design was capturing its views and strategically harnessing daylight. The interior layout was refined to focus outwardly by removing counters, cabinets, and other design elements that broke up the space and interrupted sightlines.
Cool colors are offset with warm wood tones, strengthening the interior space’s connection to the great outdoors. Some of the home’s most iconic midcentury elements, such as the stone-lined foyer and staircase, were retained or repurposed, ready for whatever the next fifty years may bring.
