SPINNING STORIES
The JA team won the grand prize in the Little Free Library Design/Build competition for this special installation! The theme of the 2014 Seattle Design Festival was Design in Motion, and our winning entry featured an easy to construct kit of parts including recycled bicycle wheels, and yes, it spins! You can read more about this project over on the Seattle Times.
For our design proposal, we wanted to create something dynamic and interactive. The idea of using bicycle wheels and parts became a strong tie to Seattle’s culture and the Design Festival’s theme. By marrying two bicycle tires to one another and turning them on their sides, JA designers created a playful carousel to display books and encourage interaction with the library itself and other visitors. Our local architectural icon, the Space Needle, is also reflected in the form of the design and further referenced by the orange color of the umbrella, the Needle’s original color.
