PIXELS

Designed as a Donor Wall for the Friends of Waterfront Seattle information center, Pixels is composed of thousands of end cut pine dowels of various lengths and arranged to mimic a wave formation in vertical, rather than horizontal, form. Some of the dowels include stenciled acrylic lettering used to spell out donor names, but due to the differing lengths of the dowels, nothing aligns perfectly. This piece is a study in perception and relies on our mind’s ability to compensate for shifts in depth. The observer perceives the three-dimensional wave and can read the words even though they are not technically complete. For most viewers, the visual clues are enough to fill in the missing pieces. The piece is mounted on sturdy wheels to make it easy to move around in the space, and the back of it serves as a pinup board for community presentations.
