ORIGAMI

The Origami DADU is designed to respond to its site: openings to take in views, screening to filter daylight, and opacity to provide privacy. Designed to take advantage of lots with a change in elevation, Origami’s building shell unfolds to provide a second level and folds away when it is not needed. Origami’s interior spaces are bathed in natural light. The first floor includes a living room, full kitchen, and bathroom. Upstairs, the bedroom is wrapped in an exterior screen that can be closed to enhance privacy, partially opened to filter light, or fully opened to frame views.

As its name implies, Origami can be manipulated to meet the needs of its occupants. The ground floor living space works as a studio apartment for an aging parent. The privacy of the second-floor bedroom makes Origami a flexible live/work unit, and it is large enough to accommodate a couple. Incorporating an optional garage, Origami folds nicely into a backyard with alley access where it can provide additional income as a rental property, provide multi-generational living arrangements, or serve as a guest suite.
