CONTEMPO

Stepped into a terraced hillside, Contempo is a new residential community under construction in southeast Seattle. Organized around an interior grid of pedestrian streets to take advantage of sweeping territorial views, these through-site pathways encourage interactions between neighbors and offer visual and physical connections between public spaces and private gathering spaces. A mix of rowhouses, townhomes, and single-family residences comprise the 58-unit community, and thoughtful façade composition and curated materiality differentiate the homes while giving the development a cohesive aesthetic. Using the steep hill to their advantage, JA designers maximized the homes’ interior living spaces while also stabilizing the slope. Designed to Built Green 4 Star standards, Contempo’s sustainability measures include heat pumps; high-efficiency lighting, appliances, and fixtures; and bioretention planters to filter rainwater.
