Lake Washington Residence

This house on Lake Washington occupies the border between land and water. It also occupies a place between the past and the present, as old cottages along the lake give way to elaborate urban enclaves. The young family who lives here wanted to keep the good things about their house such as the friendly scale and casual beach cabin feel, but needed more room and wanted brighter, more modern spaces. The answer was to add 400 SF of new ground-level space, a 1000 SF second floor and to wrap the whole in a brand new double skin. The inner skin is composed of cedar and glass, imparting warmth and transparency. Over the glass and wood is protective shell of steel that can weather winter storms and the damp
lakeside climate.
